What ATC Radio Sounds Like

You only need to notice who is speaking, what instruction was given, and what the pilot reads back.

ATIS

ATIS is a recorded airport information broadcast

This is not a controller talking to one pilot. It is a repeating airport information recording.

Pilots mention the ATIS code, like information Bravo, so ATC knows they heard the current airport information.

Pilot

The pilot calls Ground after copying ATIS

The pilot calls Ground after copying ATIS and gives the callsign, location, request, and ATIS code.

The ATIS code tells Ground the pilot heard the current airport information before asking to taxi.

Ground

Ground gives taxi and hold-short instructions

ATC used the callsign, named a taxi route, and gave a required hold-short instruction.

Hold-short instructions are important and must be read back.

Pilot

The pilot reads back the hold-short instruction

The pilot repeats the runway, taxiway, and hold-short instruction, then closes with the callsign.

You are listening for the structure, not trying to memorize every word yet.
